The Many Benefits of Masturbation

29 Jun 2023
Let’s talk about SELF-care. No, not the marketing beast of a buzzword we were gifted thanks to 2020. I’m talking the real self-care – masturbation! Other than just feeling great at that moment, there are lots of other ways that masturbating can positively affect your day and even your life overall. Below I’ll list some of my favorite benefits to the ultimate ‘self-care' activity:

1. Masturbating boosts mood and energy.

When you orgasm, your brain releases the hormone serotonin, which helps to promotes a good mood. In addition to that little jolt of happiness, the flood of this feel-good hormone can increase your energy levels, much like a “runner’s high”.

2. Masturbating can help you relax and distract from your problems.

Having orgasms can help to calm the mind and shift your focus back to you. After all, it’s kind of difficult to think of that laundry list of to-dos when you’re either trying to orgasm or on the brink of orgasming! The logical parts of your brain shut down when having sex (with yourself or a partner). It’s nice to have a break from whatever is stressing you out. And speaking of stress…

3. Masturbating helps to release stress.

Whether it’s physical stress or emotional, orgasms are a way to release that tension within the body and mind. Again, you’ll get that hit of serotonin that will aid in relaxation.

4. Masturbating will release any pent-up sexual tension.

Have you ever been so distracted by an attractive new co-worker that you can’t focus on your work? Or find some old pictures of your partner that just can’t stop thinking about? You know what to do…

5. Masturbating can help you fall asleep.

If you’re having a tough time falling asleep (say from stress or ahem... sexual tension) the relaxation of an orgasmic release can put you into a naturally blissed-out state. This can lead to an easier time getting your eyes to close when your head hits the pillow.

6. Masturbating will help you get to know your body better.

I think this really is my favorite benefit. Exploring your own body and the way it ticks teaches you what you like and dislike in a sexual experience. This is a healthy and safe way to try new things before potentially bringing them to partner play.

7. Masturbating relieves cramps.

My second favorite way to utilize some alone time... This one is for my ladies and as I type this article, I swear to you the period gods are trying to end me. Thankfully, there’s a solution that doesn’t come in the form of any pill. The endorphins that are released when masturbating can help to combat the contractions of your uterus resulting in less cramping!

8. Masturbating will help you be a better lover.

Thanks to the hormone dopamine (also known as the pleasure-seeking hormone) the more orgasms you have, the more you want to have. This can lead to an increase in libido and sexual desire.

9. Masturbating has beauty benefits.

With an increase in blood flow to the surface of the skin, masturbation can make your face look more beautiful. We all know about the post-sex glow, and it’s a result of that flood of hormones reducing inflammation and contributing to a more youthful appearance.

10. Masturbating promotes a positive body image and boosts confidence.

Another famous hormone – oxytocin, AKA the love hormone – is released during orgasm. Typically, we hear this talked about in regard to making a closer connection to your partner. But I say, give that love to your damn self! No one knows you like you. And no one can love you like you! So, take some time for yourself, show yourself some affection, and let the love flow!

I’d love to hear some of your experiences with how masturbation has affected your life outside the bedroom. Tweet us and share with us how self-exploration has made positive changes in your world!
